PigProgress-Maple Leaf completes its conversion to collective housing

In 2014, the Canadian pork industry pledged to stop using pregnancy boxes by 2024. Maple Leaf also signed the agreement, but the goal is to renovate all of its sow houses by the end of 2021. The pig houses owned by Maple Leaf Foods produce approximately 40% of the pig houses. The pigs that the company uses to produce its branded pork products every year.

The processor has studied pig houses and feeding systems around the world and combined its observed best practices into one system, which the company calls "Advanced Open Sow House." The system creates feeding areas with various spaces to support the sows' desire to choose when to play, socialize, eat and rest. The open system helps farm staff observe the sows as they move around, monitor their health, and provide care.
