Sir Tom to Little Mix: The music legends that have graced Pontypridd's Ynysangharad Park over the years - Wales Online

Some of the music world's finest have played in Pontypridd's Ynysangharad Park - have you been to any of these shows?

It all started back in 2005 when Tom Jones was invited to play his hometown in celebration of his then-upcoming 65th birthday. The show was a massive success with an estimated audience of 20,000 adoring fans.

A year later and the Full Ponty festival was born. The first two years put Pontypridd on the rock music map, along with its fringe events throughout the town.

The first festival was held on a May bank holiday weekend and featured two days of rock music including headliners Feeder and Funeral for a Friend, and a third day which was dubbed the Max Boyce day on the Bank Holiday Monday. The event was hosted by Avanti and The Pop Factory.

In 2007, the festival returned but this time as a one-day event. The line-up was just as diverse as the year before, with sets from The Gallows, Kids in Glass Houses, Paramore, Reel Big Fish and The Automatic all over three stages. This year's fringe events included shows by Head Automatica and Henry Rollins.

After the success of 2007, the festival returned with a different agenda and a new name. Ponty's Big Weekend ran from 2008 until 2014. The line-ups over the years have seen the likes of JLS, The Wanted, Sugababes, Little Mix and Olly Murs all playing to thousands of people.

Ponty's Big Weekend returned for a one-off show back in 2019 with headliners Ocean Colour Scene. Here's hoping for more music to return to the park - sooner rather than later.
