On Sept. 20, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors amended an ordinance that would have essentially banned rodeo and equestrian events as well as common animal husbandry practices.

The ordinance was designed to ban wild cow milking and equipment like spurs, ropes and flank straps. The language on devices has been removed, the supervisors did vote to pass a version that would still rid the county of wild cow milking, however.

Dr. Doug Corey, the Chairman of the PRCA’s Livestock and Animal Wellness Council, joined WSR this week to talk more about the situation.

The ordinance was designed to ban wild cow milking and equipment like spurs, ropes and flank straps.

Corey said the best way to describe last week’s vote as a win.

“We had a lot of people involved in this and we couldn’t do it without him,” he said. “I’m really pleased with the outcome.....If you’re in the rodeo industry, in the rodeo world and we have issues like this, step up, write letters, make phone calls.”

Corey believes that because the ordinance unanimously passed in favor of keeping rodeo devices legal, it may impact other areas in California who were considering proposing similar rules.
